SEOUL, April 26 — Samsung Electronics Co said today it would mass-produce its faster, energy-saving quad-core mobile microprocessor to power the third generation of its flagship Galaxy S smartphone, due to be unveiled next week.

Samsung said it is sampling the chips to major handset makers as it seeks to expand its customer base from Apple Inc to its handset rivals such as Nokia, HTC and Motorola.

The South Korean firm is the world’s top manufacturer of mobile application processors (AP), enjoying booming sales of Apple’s iPhone and iPad as well as its own Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets.

PUTRAJAYA: The enhanced MyKad is so popular that it takes up to three months to get your hands on it.

Previously, an applicant only needed to wait a day to get the new MyKad.

The National Registration Department (NRD) is receiving an average of 21,000 applications daily since the introduction of the enhanced MyKad in January.

Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam said as of March 31, the department had received 1,516,126 applications for the new card.

He said the NRD had the capacity to issue about 8,000 cards a day.

Samsung Electronics posted record quarterly profit of US$5.15bil (RM15.45bil), driven by booming sales of its smartphones and the Galaxy Note "phablet," which it hopes will show it has a flair for innovation to match rival Apple Inc.

"Higher-than-expected shipments of the Galaxy Note seem to have given an upside to earnings," said Lee Ka-keun, an analyst at Hana Daetoo Securities. "Note sales will increase further in the second quarter, and handset profit will grow despite a rise in marketing costs related to the London Olympics."The Note – part phone, part mini-Tablet – with a throwback stylus and
screen half the size of the iPad, has sold more than five million since launching in October, and is proving a surprise money earner for the South Korean electronics giant that has a reputation as a "fast follower" rather than design leader.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 5 — Google Inc is getting into the eyewear business with a pair of thin wraparound shades that puts the company’s web services in your face. The experimental “augmented reality” glasses — from the same team that is developing self-driven cars — can snap photos, initiate videochats and display directions at the sound of a user’s voice. The prototype digital glasses, unveiled on the company’s Google+ social network yesterday, are still being tweaked and tested, and are not available in stores yet. “We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input,” Google wrote in a post on a Google+ page devoted to Project Glass.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 — Google on Tuesday opened a new online shop stocked with digital music, films, books and “apps” for Android mobile gadgets, ramping up its challenge to rivals such as Apple and Amazon.com.

The California Internet titan combined Android Market, Google Music and Google eBookstore in a Google Play “digital entertainment destination” where people can get content and store it free in the Internet “cloud.”

“You can find, enjoy and share your favourite music, movies, books and apps on the Web and on your Android phone or tablet,” Google director of digital content Jamie Rosenberg said in a blog post.

SEATTLE, Feb 29 — Microsoft Corp unveils the first widely available test version of Windows 8 today, giving the public the first chance to try out the slick, new-look operating system it hopes will restore the company’s fading tech supremacy.

Windows 8, as the first Microsoft operating system compatible with low-power microprocessors designed by ARM Holdings Plc, will run on tablets as well as desktops and laptops.

“The operating system has begun to be seen as largely irrelevant,” said Sid Parakh, an analyst at fund firm McAdams Wright Ragen, which holds Microsoft shares. “This is the release that will have to prove its relevance all over again.”

PUTRAJAYA: The National Registration Department (NRD) has rolled out the new MyKad using the latest laser technology and security features.

NRD director-general Datuk Jariah Mohd Said said the new card was being issued at NRD offices in Putrajaya and Shah Alam while its offices in other states would follow suit from Feb 15.
Made of polycarbonate for strong resistance and embedded with a chip, the card also has a “ghost” image of the cardholder to curb forgery.

Speaking to reporters while observing the issuance of the card at the NRD office here yesterday, she said 370 of 700 applications from the people who queued up, were processed by 10am.

Jariah said the new MyKad, which adhered to international standards, would overcome the quality and durability issue raised by certain quarters. Read More . . .
